Beneath the captivating melodies and vibrant performances that animate Berlin’s streets lies a stark and often overlooked reality. Street performance, or busking, remains technically illegal in many parts of the city. As a result, artists many of whom are migrants or cultural minorities face systemic challenges including substantial fines, the threat of having their instruments confiscated, and, in some cases, physical and verbal harassment from the public.
The Berlin Symphony of Rhythm is a documentary project that seeks to give these artists the platform they have long been denied. It is an act of cultural preservation, a tribute to creative resilience, and a critical exploration of the societal structures that marginalize non-institutionalized artistic expression. This film is not merely about music it is about survival, identity, and the right to be heard.

The Power of Storytelling: A Vision for IOA Documentary Films
Storytelling serves as a fundamental tool for understanding, preserving, and sharing human experiences. As a Nigerian-German filmmaker, director, and cinematographer, I, Idris Olawale Aleshinloye, established IOA Documentary Films as a platform dedicated to documenting compelling narratives from diverse cultural contexts. The name "IOA" is derived from my initials, symbolizing both personal identity and my commitment to the art of documentary filmmaking. My work is driven by the belief that authentic storytelling has the power to inform, inspire, and enact meaningful social change.
In an era where digital media shapes public discourse, documentary filmmaking holds significant potential to highlight untold stories, challenge dominant narratives, and foster a deeper understanding of human resilience. My approach to filmmaking emphasizes capturing stories as they unfold in real life, ensuring that the voices of those often marginalized or overlooked are amplified. Through visual storytelling, I aim to bridge gaps in cultural understanding and provide audiences with thought-provoking insights into the complexities of the human experience.
This vision is exemplified through my works, including Breaking Borders and Silent Scars. Breaking Borders recounts the courageous journey of Andreas Jaeger, who risked everything to escape the constraints of the Berlin Wall. The documentary not only explores the personal struggles of one man but also reflects on the broader historical and political ramifications of divided societies. Likewise, Silent Scars delves into the lived experiences of women who have survived trauma and emerged as advocates for change. By documenting these stories with sensitivity and depth, I seek to highlight the resilience of the human spirit while encouraging dialogue on social justice and healing.
The future of storytelling lies in its ability to convey truth, provoke critical thought, and inspire collective action. Through IOA Documentary Films, I am committed to utilizing filmmaking as a means of capturing the richness of human narratives and fostering a global community of engaged viewers. By continuing to explore complex themes through documentary cinema, I strive to contribute to a world where stories serve as catalysts for awareness, understanding, and transformation.

My Filmmaking Journey
I did not pursue a formal degree in filmmaking or cinematography; however, I view this as an advantage rather than a limitation. My journey into filmmaking began with conducting street interviews, creating YouTube videos, and sharing my knowledge with a global audience. Through continuous practice, my passion for the craft deepened, prompting me to further develop my skills through online filmmaking courses, including those taught by Spike Lee, which proved highly beneficial.
Since beginning my filmmaking career in 2017, I have independently directed, edited, and produced my films. A significant milestone in my career was the screening of one of my documentaries at the English Theatre Berlin – International Performing Arts Center on March 2, 2025. The event was not only sold out but also overbooked, reflecting the growing impact of my work. My journey as an independent filmmaker is characterized by continuous learning, creative exploration, and a commitment to storytelling.
